It’s March 31st and spring break at College of DuPage. We are officially in that strange, post-midterm limbo where the initial “New Year, New Me” academic energy has evaporated, and the finish line still feels like a marathon away.
As your advisor, I see the “Midterm Daze” every year, but 2026 feels a bit different. We’re navigating a world of hyper-efficiency and AI-integrated classrooms, yet the human brain still feels that classic, analog exhaustion right about now.
Here is your post-midterm survival guide to help you finish this semester with your GPA (and your sanity) intact.
1. The Midterm “Autopsy”
First things first: Check your grades. I know, I know—ignorance is bliss. But “bliss” doesn’t transfer to a four-year university.
If you crushed it: Keep that momentum going! If you didn’t: Do not panic, and definitely do not ghost your classes. Most 16-week courses have a withdrawal deadline around April 19th. Before you “break glass in case of emergency” and drop, go talk to your professor. They are surprisingly human. Ask them the “Path to a C” question, you might be surprised how recoverable your grade actually is.
2. The 2026 Registration Wave is Coming
While you’re still trying to survive Spring, the college is already living in the future.
Registration Alert: Registration for Summer 2026 is happening right now, and fall registration opened on April 8th.The “good” sections—you know, the ones that aren’t at 8:00 AM on a Friday—fill up fast.
3. The “Flourishing” Gap
Recent studies (like the 2025 Healthy Minds report) show that while fewer students are in “crisis” mode, fewer of us are “flourishing.” You might not be depressed, but you might be feeling “meh.”
It is okay to be “meh.” But don’t let “meh” turn into isolation. If you’ve been doing 100% of your socializing through a screen lately, try hitting the student HUB or the coffee shop this week. A 10-minute conversation with a real person can be more effective than a third energy drink.
4. The FAFSA Reminder
I’d be a terrible advisor if I didn’t mention the 2026-2027 FAFSA. If you haven’t filed it yet, do it this weekend. Some state aid deadlines are looming or have passed, but federal aid is still on the table.
Pro Tip: If you’re struggling with a specific concept, the Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC) is likely at its quietest right now, just after the midterm rush. Go now before the “I-have-a-final-in-two-days” crowd swarms the place in May.
We’re in the home stretch, everyone. The days are getting longer, the campus is finally thawing out, and you’ve already survived the hardest part of the semester. Take a breath, check your degree audit, and let’s get this done.
Be well,
Wendy
