Civic Engagement

Constitution Day

Constitution Day is a College of DuPage faculty initiative that commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution. Louise Leigh helped lead the effort to establish Constitution Day as a national observance, and her work, along with Senator Robert Byrd, resulted in the 2004 amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill, which officially designated the day as Citizenship and Constitution Day. In May 2005, the U.S. Department of Education reinforced the law by extending its application to any school receiving federal funds.

Together, these laws require federal agencies to provide employees with educational materials about the Constitution and require all educational institutions receiving federal funding to hold a Constitution Day program for students each year.

Living Leadership Program

The Living Leadership Program at College of DuPage is a free, non-transcript certificate program. It is designed to empower students. They become active leaders and positive change-makers. The program allows students to start at any time and progress at their own pace to meet the completion requirements.

Civic Leaders

The Civic Leaders Program is a 6-week, cohort-based leadership experience supported by a grant from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Students receive a $350 scholarship while building civic skills and civic identity. After completing the program, participants are encouraged to apply as local election workers for the 2026 primary and general elections and to stay engaged through the Student Leadership Council’s COD Votes student committee..

Braver Angels

Braver Angels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging political and ideological divides through respectful dialogue and mutual understanding. It brings together people with differing views—whether liberal, conservative, or independent—to engage in structured conversations that promote empathy, critical thinking, and civil discourse.

For a Social and Behavioral Science major, Braver Angels offers a real-world application of concepts like group dynamics, conflict resolution, and social psychology. It provides opportunities to study how people navigate differences, build relationships across divides, and foster cooperation in an increasingly polarized society. Engaging with Braver Angels can enhance skills in communication, mediation, and social analysis—valuable for careers in counseling, policy, advocacy, and more.
