As the spring term comes to a close, there is always a familiar mix of emotions on campus. Relief. Pride. A little exhaustion. And, for many students, a quiet sense of uncertainty about what comes next.
That is exactly why summer term matters.
Summer is not just a pause between terms. It is a bridge. A chance to regroup, recharge, and refocus. It is the space where students can catch their breath, celebrate what they have accomplished, and prepare for a strong return in the fall. Whether you are taking classes, working, spending time with family, or deciding on your next academic step, summer can be a valuable reset.
As your Social and Behavioral Science and the Library advisor, I want to encourage you to use this season intentionally. The end of spring term is the perfect time to reflect on your progress. What went well this semester? What challenged you? What supports helped you succeed? These questions are not just for reflection; they are tools for planning. Growth often begins when we pause long enough to notice what we need.
If this semester felt overwhelming, you are not alone. Many students balance classes, work, caregiving, transportation, finances, and personal responsibilities all at once. Progress does not always look perfect. Sometimes success is simply showing up, staying engaged, or asking for help when things get heavy. That matters.
Summer is also a great time to get organized for fall. Check your degree progress. Review your upcoming classes. Look ahead at your schedule and think about what kind of rhythm will help you feel more prepared. If you are in Social and Behavioral Science or Library and Information and Technology courses, consider how those classes connect to your goals, your transfer plans, or your future career. If you are using the library, take advantage of the time to explore research support, study tools, databases, and resources that can make your next semester smoother.
And do not forget that advising is part of the bridge too. If you are unsure about your next steps, this is a good time to reach out. We can talk through course planning, academic goals, transfer options, and ways to stay on track. Sometimes a short conversation can bring a lot of clarity.
Summer is also about momentum. Small steps now can make a big difference later. A little planning, a little reflection, and a little support can turn a stressful fall into a more confident one. You do not have to map out everything at once. Just take the next right step.
As we move from spring into summer, I hope you give yourself credit for how far you have come. Every semester brings lessons, and every ending makes room for a new beginning. Rest if you need to. Celebrate your wins. Then come back ready to build on what you have learned.
Fall will be here before we know it, and this summer can help you arrive prepared, focused, and encouraged.
You have already crossed one bridge this year. Let’s make the next one even stronger.
Be well,
Wendy
